"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." -Michael Pollan, In Defense of Food

If you want to talk about "vision", the above quote from Michael Pollan, author of The Ominvores Dilemma, In Defense of Food and Food Rules, pretty well sums this blog up. I came across his motto while struggling with on an advertising project, and as evidenced by the existence of this webpage, it had an effect. The national food guide tells us to eat a ridiculous amount of veggies per day, so I decided to adopt and advocate this very reasonable philosophy.

Problem is, I don't know how to cook. This puts me in no position to follow/advocate anyone's food philosophy, except maybe the Lebanese pizza guys down the street who abide by the motto: "pepperoni is good for you." Sure I could throw some green leafy stuff into a bowl, but I find salads invariably depressing.

Thus vision met pragmatism and I decided to look at my cooking ineptitude as a opportunity. If I have to learn to cook, and I want to eat plants instead of the heavy meat filled nonsense/deliciousness we traditionally eat, why not skip that chapter of the instruction manual?

This web log documents my various attempts to unearth, cook, and share various recipes that contain mostly plants. Veggies and fruit are preferred over grains (because toast already takes up half my diet). Easy and fast are preferred over effort and time. I also try to provide some background on the foods I cook because it's interesting, and because food doesn't grow in grocery stores.

This is an important point: I'm not striving to be a master chef here. I'm striving for mediocrity, quick and convenient. Let me get a healthy base of recipes going, and then I'll try to flambé something.

I hope you enjoy this blog. It's got something for the lazy, the rushed, and the ignorant- and that covers just about all of us.
